Is Pakistan selling JF-17 Thunder fighter jets to Iraqi Air Force?

There's been strong speculation about Pakistan selling JF-17 Thunder jets to Iraq:

  • Media reports in July 2023 suggested a deal for 12 JF-17 Block III fighters was close.
  • This followed a $664 million allocation approved by the Iraqi government for such a purchase.
  • Close relations between Pakistan and Iraq further fueled the rumors, with Iraq already buying MFI-17 trainer aircraft from Pakistan.

However, there hasn't been official confirmation yet.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Parliamentary ratification in Iraq might be a formality that needs to be completed.
  • China's role is important since the JF-17 is a joint project. Iraq might need China's approval for any weapons included with the jets.

Overall, the sale seems likely, but an official announcement is awaited.
